About
Andrea Ferrari (born 1970) lives in Milan, where he studied philosophy. He is a self–taught photographer and has an impressive career in publishing and design photography. This background let him to develop several strands in his visual research, through a multidisciplinary approach. As noted by Quentin Bajac “Andrea Ferrari surely believes, (…) that reality needs to be read like hieroglyphics and that photographic language can also help in deciphering these symbols. Photography to him is a conscious, reflective practice of a system of signs and is linked to semiology, the analysis of signs.”
His practice delves into the idea of “the archetype”, uncovering the connections between photography and sculpture across abstract and figurative topics. He explores photography predominantly as a reflective practice of a system of signs, looking at the relationship between writing, image and object. Naturally favouring the tendency to remove rather than add in his form of expression, language is a track that merges perfectly into the observation of nature. Every body of work involves photographs, drawings, writings and “naturalia” and entail a unique production technique.
Over the last decade, He has concentrated on four bodies of work: Wild Window (2007 – 2014), Hidden paper (2010 – 2015), The pictures included in this envelope (2012 – 2013), By means of the sun (2015 – 2025), Giochi di carta (2020 – ongoing). Publishing and book–making is also a significant part of Ferrari’s practice: every project is always conceived through a published or limited edition book.
